Steve
Steve is a boy who visits the new Whit's End in Connellsville while Ed Washington is learning to manage the shop. He wants an ice cream cone but cannot find the dollar meant to pay for it, so Ed gives him one free. Other children immediately demand the same treatment, creating chaos for the inexperienced manager. Steve later returns, and Ed learns that the boy has lost his father. Spending time playing with Steve helps Ed recognize his gift for connecting with children who need care and attention. Their meeting contributes to Ed's decision to choose meaningful work at Whit's End over a prestigious corporate promotion.
