Samuel
Samuel was an Israelite prophet who learned to listen for God while serving under Eli at the tabernacle. As a boy, he received a difficult message of judgment against Eli's household and faithfully repeated it. Israel later recognized him as God's prophet. Samuel anointed Saul as the nation's first king, then confronted him when pride and disobedience overtook his leadership. After God rejected Saul, Samuel traveled to Bethlehem and anointed the young shepherd David as Israel's future king. Although Samuel sometimes felt fear and sorrow over the duties given to him, he obeyed. His life connected Israel's troubled period under the judges with the rise of its first two kings.
