Johnson is the principal of Odyssey Middle School, the school Alex Jefferson attends. The school is home to Odyssey's first program integrating students with special needs into the regular student body. When a student-council campaign grew up around new arrival Charles VanHorn, Johnson confirmed that Charles belonged to that new special-education class. Johnson also confirmed that the student newspaper had accidentally printed the title of a different poem above Charles's work. Those facts helped Whit see that the entire campaign rested on a misunderstanding. Johnson is willing to listen to student ideas as well. After Alex Jefferson and David Straussberg studied a book on etiquette, the principal let the pair award good-manners badges to their schoolmates.
