Joelle Billingsley is a young woman in New Zealand and a cousin of Jay Smouse. Her mother died two years ago, and Joelle has been running from that grief ever since. She has fallen under the sway of Ethan, a smooth-talking young cult leader who orders his followers to bury everything from their old lives. At his urging she buried her family photographs, and she now calls his group her new family. Her heartbroken father prays for her every day. She also has a baby sister. One small link to home stays with her: a scrap of crochet stitched with the word Tarore. That is the name of the family sheepdog, named after the Maori girl whose Gospel of Luke helped spread the faith across the islands.
