Emily "Emmy" Capello is a longtime friend of Jack Allen who refuses to encourage his self-pity. As a young man, Jack writes to her after Jenny Whittaker rejects his romantic hopes and he believes Whit has betrayed him. When Emily's letters no longer reach him, she travels to confront him in person. She listens to his account, acknowledges his hurt, and carefully separates that pain from the accusations he has built around it. Emily reminds Jack that loving his friends means wanting what is best for them, even when he does not receive what he wants. Her honest loyalty helps him reconsider his anger and stop shutting out everyone who cares for him.
