Mr. Burton is a teacher in Odyssey and the editor of the Odyssey Owl, the local middle school's newspaper. He oversees the paper's student journalists, among them Lucy Cunningham-Schultz, who writes stories and interviews for the Owl. He holds the paper to firm standards and does not bend them to keep anyone happy. When the popular young columnist Emily Fowler demanded the front page, he refused. She left for the rival underground paper, the Odyssey Voice, but the Owl went on to win the countywide award for best middle school newspaper. His steadiness makes the Owl a proving ground where students learn hard lessons about loyalty, honesty, and good work.
