Alvin York was a gifted Tennessee marksman whose early life was marked by drinking, gambling, fighting, and a violent temper. The death of his friend Everett forced him to face the direction of his life, and he turned to God under Pastor Pyle's guidance. Alvin became a church elder and hoped to build a quiet future with Gracie Williams. When the United States entered the First World War, his belief against killing conflicted with the military draft. Captain Danforth challenged him to consider whether love might require protecting innocent people. After praying and studying Scripture on his mountain, Alvin chose to serve without hatred, seeking peace even amid the dangers of combat.
