Tanyer Hyde

Tanyer Hyde is the schoolyard bully young Bernard Walton faces while serving as a middle-school crossing guard. After Tanyer and his gang jaywalk, Bernard reports them, and their detention keeps them from an important baseball game. Tanyer demands that the write-up be withdrawn and threatens Bernard when he refuses. The next day, Bernard must guide the angry boys across the street while every expected helper disappears. He prays, keeps his promise, and stands his ground. Tanyer shoves him into the path of an approaching car, forcing custodian Mr. Umphrees to risk his life in the rescue. The consequences eventually place Tanyer and his companions on the safety patrol they once ignored.
