Mr. Sneed
Mr. Sneed is the Mulligan family's grumpy next-door neighbor and a determined opponent of their wandering animals. Offended by the smell and disorder, he files a petition to remove the family and its menagerie from the county. His complaints add pressure when the Mulligans already face money problems, school trouble, and escaped creatures. Yet Sneed becomes part of an unexpected rescue after finding Chester, the baby kangaroo, collapsed deep in a storm drain. He alerts the family, and Hector crawls into the narrow space to bring Chester out. The animal recovers, and a fertilizer company offers value for the manure Sneed hated. Irritable but attentive enough to notice danger, Mr. Sneed helps reveal how an unpleasant problem can become the starting point for something useful.
