Reuben was the oldest of Jacob's twelve sons and one of Joseph's eleven brothers. Although jealous of their father's special affection for Joseph, he refused to let the others shed their brother's blood. Reuben suggested placing Joseph in a dry well and secretly planned to rescue him, but the others sold Joseph while he was away. Years later, famine brought the brothers before Joseph in Egypt without recognizing him. Reuben remembered his warning and believed their trouble was a consequence of what they had done. He tried to guarantee Benjamin's safety when the family had to return. Reuben often lacked control of events, yet repeatedly tried to protect his younger brothers.
