Nick
Nick is Bernard Walton's best friend during Bernard's middle-school years as a crossing guard. When Bernard reports Tanyer Hyde and his gang for jaywalking, detention keeps the bullies from an important baseball game and makes Bernard their target. Bernard is later assigned to guide the same boys across the street after detention. As adults and officials step away, Nick also leaves his friend to face the threat alone. His absence deepens Bernard's sense that doing right has isolated him. Nick's part is brief, but it highlights the difference between friendship that feels safe and courage that remains beside someone under pressure. Bernard ultimately finds guidance from custodian Mr. Umphrees and strength through prayer, learning that even a best friend may fail when fear becomes personal.
