Melvin (Lightning) Livingston

Melvin "Lightning" Livingston is a retired basketball star who settles in Odyssey and opens a sports store. Young Jimmy Barclay quickly makes him a hero, thrilled by Lightning's workshops, game films, and attention. Lightning's past becomes public when he admits that drug use ended his playing career. Jimmy feels betrayed, but Lightning does not hide behind excuses. He visits the Barclay home, asks forgiveness, and uses a Bible filled with imperfect people to explain that God can still work through those who have failed. He points Jimmy toward Jesus as the only hero who never disappoints. Humble about his mistakes and generous with his experience, Lightning becomes more valuable as an honest friend and mentor than as a spotless sports legend.
