Lester

Lester is a gentle, mentally challenged man in Odyssey. When the Washington family moves into the old McAlister estate, he is secretly living there, hidden in a chamber deep beneath the house. A runaway, he is jumpy and childlike, terrified of doctors, shots, and the upstairs room where old Ernie died. He is a close friend of John Avery Whittaker, whom he met when Whit fell through a trapdoor into his secret room. Despite his many fears, Lester shows real courage when the people he loves are in danger, and he often understands far more than anyone guesses. With little money of his own, he celebrates Christmas the only way he can afford - by serving everyone in town, one shoveled walk at a time.
