G. Winston Smith

G. Winston Smith is a wealthy philanthropist who donates artwork to Whit's End, including the long lost masterpiece Gleaning at Twilight. He presents the painting as a family heirloom and asks that his gift remain private. A hidden inscription proves a different history: the work had belonged to a Jewish family, and Smith's father, a German soldier in occupied Paris, had stolen it. Confronted by Jack and Joanne Allen and an elderly rabbi connected to the original owner, Smith admits the truth he had concealed. His attempt to give away the valuable painting becomes an opportunity for honest restitution rather than quiet escape. Burdened by inherited wrongdoing, Smith finds courage to expose the past and help turn stolen treasure into a gift for the community.
