Mr. Douglas

Mr. Douglas is the school guidance counselor who advises Mandy Straussberg about her future. He responds to her dream of becoming a writer with discouraging statistics about income and employment, partly because he once abandoned his own interest in fashion design for a more practical career. He also scrambles to replace a forgotten school assembly booking and accepts Liz's suggestion of retired comedy magicians Irving Mendelson and Solly Greenfarb. Their determination not to waste a gift they love using challenges his cautious advice. After seeing Mandy and the performers regain confidence, Mr. Douglas decides to revisit the creative dream he set aside. His change reminds students that practical concerns need not silence genuine abilities and worthwhile callings.
