Caesar Rodney
Caesar Rodney was a Delaware patriot whose deciding vote supported American independence. Seriously ill with cancer, he rode about eighty miles through a violent storm to reach Philadelphia in time for the vote. His courage impresses Sophie in the Imagination Station, but his ownership of enslaved people forces her to confront a painful contradiction. Rodney could risk his health for political freedom while denying freedom to others. His life therefore resists a simple picture of either flawless heroism or complete worthlessness. Alongside Benjamin Franklin and John Adams, he helps Wyatt and Sophie understand that the United States was built through imperfect people whom God could still use for important purposes despite serious failures and blind spots.
