Austin McKinley

Austin McKinley is the star of the Briarton Bengals and a loud rival of the Odyssey Owls. He arrives at the Owls' car wash in a Corvette and mocks their team, their equipment, and quarterback Cooper Calhoun. His swagger follows him onto the football field, where a fierce tackle leaves him facing a frightening injury and an uncertain future. Angry and overwhelmed, Austin rejects Cooper's first apology. As Cooper begins volunteering with rehabilitation patients, however, Austin gradually allows him back into his life. Their tense relationship pushes both boys beyond pride, rivalry, and blame. Austin's ordeal also gives the Owls a chance to show generosity when their weight-room fund is quietly used to provide rehabilitation equipment that may help him walk again. This reveals a vulnerable young man beneath the boasting athlete.
