Albert Schultz
Albert Schultz is Lucy Cunningham-Schultz's cousin and a gifted high school basketball player who has hidden that he cannot read. After attending twenty different schools, he believes athletic success is his only path forward. To stay eligible for the team, Albert pays another student to complete his homework and dodges Lucy's questions for the school newspaper. Whit exposes the practical danger of illiteracy, while Henderson, a former basketball hopeful, defeats Albert in a game and reveals that reading problems also limited his own future. Out of excuses, Albert enters a church reading clinic. Proud and embarrassed but capable of change, he begins learning beside Henderson and discovers that asking for help protects possibilities basketball alone cannot guarantee.
