Abernathy is a justice of the peace in the small town of Odyssey, where he is addressed as Judge Abernathy and receives couples at his own home. He offers an alternative for people who want a civil ceremony rather than a church wedding with a pastor. Jason Whittaker and Tasha Forbes once turned to him for exactly that reason. After abruptly moving up their wedding plans, they drove straight to his house intending to marry on the spot. Abernathy came outside to invite the anxious pair in, showing a courteous and welcoming manner. In the end the two lingered on his doorstep, working through questions of their own, and told him they were not ready after all.
